If I were in first place and I needed new tires, am I just screwed? Obviously, I don’t know squat about Nascar.

During a yellow flag, you may lose a couple of spots and during the green flag nope. Once they get through cycling through the green flag pit stops you should be back in the lead again.

Depending on the number of cars in front of you that pit, you could gain or lose spots. If you stay out, there might be fewer cars in front of you. Everyone on pit row still race for position.

If everyone else behind you also pit, and you were the first one done with your pit stop, you would retain your spot. But, no, you don’t just keep your spot. Pit road can be the easiest place to gain or lose spots.

In most situations they pit under caution so all the cars come down pit road at get serviced.

Under the green flag, the leader will drop to back quite a few places depending on whether or not other cars pit also. In most situations they will “cycle” through, meaning all the other cars end up pitting and the racing order in general is restored.

The simple answer is you can’t, unless you have a HUGE lead. If everybody else comes in behind you, and you have at least as good a pit stop as them, you can keep your spot that way. On green flag stops though, most drivers end up pretty close to the same spot after everybody stops they were in before the stops started.

Depends on what you do and what the competition does.

If say you came in 1st and just did fuel only or 2 tyres whereas the rest did fuel & 4 tyres then you would easily leave 1st.

Vice Versa however you’d lose a bunch of positions.
