Ya know, I’ve looked at that term before and sorta wondered a bit myself that it looked odd, not to be called “Motorcross.” I agree it never looked quite right.
So I did some quick digging, out of curiosity since you brought it up, and I have found our answer.
The French came up with the name “motocross,” from “motorcycle” and “cross-country.” Seems it goes way back to the 1920’s/1930’s era in Europe (Britain, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden & France.)
Funny thing is, back then it was called Scrambles.
We learned something new today!

Motor cross is the car version. where they drive on both tarmac and gravel. this has been established before the Motorcycles became a sport. so they adopted motocross (and then MotoX) the term Moto is also used for the MotoGP as motor GP would be given to the Formula 1 grand prix.

We are all just plain too lazy to be bothered putting that extra letter in the word. As all motocross people are in a race to get to the end of everything including words.
Basically I wouldn’t really know but great answer Kentucy Dave!

Actually, It’s because you have motos. (each race)
Moto 1 and Moto 2 in Amateur races..
